01

What is the pixel pitch?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters (mm) measured from the center of one pixel to the center of the adjacent pixel on an LED display, and it plays a crucial role in determining the pixel density. A smaller pixel pitch, typically ranging from 0.7mm to 2mm, indicates a higher resolution, which is ideal for close-up viewing where fine details and clarity are essential. Conversely, a larger pixel pitch, often exceeding 10mm, is more suitable for distant, outdoor viewing, where the display needs to be visible from far away, and individual pixels are less discernible.

02

How to choose the right pixel pitch for your application?

Pixel pitch is directly related to how the human eye perceives a digital display. If you stand too close to an LED display, you may notice black gaps between the pixels. By moving farther away, you can enjoy a better visual experience.

At a specific distance, the Optimum Pixel Pitch provides the best visual acuity, while the Acceptable Pixel Pitch offers a satisfactory viewing experience.

  • Optimal pixel pitch = distance (in meters) ÷ 10 ÷ 2.5
  • Acceptable pixel pitch = distance (in meters) ÷ 10

For example, at a viewing distance of 3 meters (approximately 8 feet), the optimal pixel pitch would be 1.2 mm, and the acceptable pixel pitch would be 3 mm.

03

Why contrast ratio matters more than brightness for LED Screen?

Brightness and contrast are two key factors that significantly affect the visual quality of an LED screen.LED screen brightness, measured in nits, is crucial for outdoor visibility, while contrast, which measures the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black, is essential for image depth and sharpness. High brightness helps combat sunlight washout, but a high contrast ratio ensures vivid, detailed, and non-blurry images.

In summary, while brightness ensures that the screen is visible in various lighting conditions, contrast improves the overall image quality by enhancing the range of colors and details. For the best image quality, a high contrast ratio is generally preferred over maximum brightness, as it provides richer, more realistic images.

04

How bright should an LED screen be for indoor and outdoor use?

For clear visibility without glare, indoor screens typically require a brightness level of 500 to 1,500 nits.

In contrast, outdoor screens need a much higher brightness—ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 nits—to effectively counteract direct sunlight.

For semi-outdoor environments, such as shop windows, a brightness range of 2,000 to 4,000 nits is generally appropriate. Higher nit levels are essential for optimal visibility in bright ambient light conditions.

05

What is IP Rating?

“IP” stands for Ingress Protection, a rating system defined by IEC 60529. It classifies how well a product resists dust and water.

Each IP rating has two digits:

  • The first digit (0–6) indicates protection against solid particles.
  • The second digit (0–9) indicates protection against liquids.

For example, IP65 means the product is completely dust-tight (6) and resistant to water jets from any direction (5).

Common IP Ratings for LED Displays
Different environments require different levels of protection. Here are typical recommendations:

  • Indoor Displays (e.g., shopping malls, lobbies): IP20, IP30 – basic dust protection.
  • l Semi-Outdoor / Covered Areas: IP44, IP54 – suitable for sheltered areas.
  • Outdoor Installation: Minimum IP65 front / IP54 back; better: IP65 on both sides.
  • Heavy Duty Environments: IP66 or IP67 – for harsh weather or industrial use.

06

Custom LED Display

The amount of brightness an LED screen needs can vary depending on the specific use and environment; for instance, a screen used outdoors in bright sunlight would require significantly higher brightness levels to remain visible compared to one used indoors in a dimly lit room.

  • Indoor Retail/Lobby: 1,000-1,500 nits.
  • Shop Windows (Daytime): 3,000-5,000 nits.
  • Outdoor Billboard: 6,000-7,000 nits (optimum) or up to 10,000 nits for harsh environments.

LED Technology

01

What is GOB (Glue on Board) technology?

GOB (Glue on Board) technology is an advanced packaging method for LED displays that involves applying a transparent, protective epoxy resin over the entire surface of an SMD LED module. This technique enhances durability by providing anti-collision, waterproof, dustproof, and moisture-proof protection. Consequently, it significantly reduces pixel failure rates while maintaining the screen’s lightweight and thermally efficient characteristics.

02

What is HOB technology?

HOB, or High-temperature solidification On Board, is a process that involves high-temperature solidification directly on the circuit board. It uses advanced nanoscale, high-performance optically conductive filler materials to provide a secondary encapsulation of the LED light board through a high-temperature curing process. This method completely isolates the LEDs from the external environment, enhancing the product’s display performance and stability, extending its service life, and significantly increasing the yield rate during the encapsulation process.

03

What is COB technology?

Chip-on-Board (COB) technology is a packaging method for electronics and LEDs where bare chips are directly mounted onto a circuit board and then encapsulated. This approach eliminates the need for two key steps: converting LED chips into individual lamp beads and reflow soldering, which are typically required in standard SMD packaging.

Could you please let me know which control system your LED display uses?

We typically use the Novastar system, with Colorlight as an alternative option. For creative LED solutions, we also utilize Mooncell.
